Caryl Haring

The Caryl Haring Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Davenport Schools Foundation (DSF) in Davenport, Iowa was created by Cynthia Haring in May 2012, shortly after her mother, Caryl, passed away. Scholarship awards, totaling $20,700, have been given out to 33 Caryl Haring scholars from 2013-2022. Every year Cynthia comes from Florida to present the awards at the DSF May scholarship awards ceremony (except for 2020 & 2021 when the ceremony was cancelled due to the pandemic).

In 2022, four students were awarded a Caryl Haring Memorial Scholarship: Riley Erwin, Brynn Hetzler, Jordan Snarr & Madison Wardlow. Past recipients are: Caitlyn Devol, Sophia Heller & Lexis Skiles (2021); Hailie Dreyer & Jennifer Mal (2020); Makenna Terry-Devore, Noah Hensley, Braden Leon & Allison Morris (2019); Jordyn Driscoll, Alyssa Duran & Emma Saskowski (2018); Anna Arvanitis, Kayleigh Bolick, Brian Dennis, Cole Flack, Madison Harland, Brittany Hildebrandt & Nikolas LaMaack (2017); Anna Black, Andrea Figg & Jonathan Shaw (2016); Grace Schebler & Sydney Porter (2015); Hannah Herington & Olivia Terronez (2014); and Emily Doxsie, Makhala Swift & Samuel Flesburg (2013). Because of Ezra

EzraCynthia Haring, who wrote "Song for Ezra" for Ezra’s family after he passed away of neuroblastoma at age 2 1/2, featured the song on her “School of Fish” children’s album, released in May 2019.  All proceeds from the sale of the song go to the Beat Nb! organization, co-founded by Ezra’s parents Kyle & Robin Matthews. In May and June 2019, “School of Fish” album producers Katia Valdeos & Cynthia Haring did several CD release parties and fundraisers in Davenport, Iowa (Cynthia’s hometown). Then their group, the Sue Sue Sisters, did a week of fundraisers in Brooksville and Spring Hill, Florida. The Iowa and Florida shows raised $1,000 for Beat Nb!, as well as $300 for the Wildlife Rescue sanctuary in Homosassa, FL and $1,200 for the Caryl Haring Memorial Scholarship Fund in Davenport, IA. The Sue Sue Sisters plan to continue to bring awareness to the challenges that families face when their children battle neuroblastoma and they support research efforts with hopes of getting a cure.
